Preserve Bluemont~
A
Western Loudoun Railroad-Era Village on the Shoulder of Mount
Weather at Snicker's Gap
Loudoun
County is being increasingly built up into modern subdivisions
and malls-but the little village of Bluemont in Western Loudoun
remains relatively untouched.
Bluemont's
original name was "Snickersville." Located on Snickersville
Turnpike at Snickers Gap ~ a nick in the Blue Ridge, visible for
many miles. Gap, turnpike, and village were named after the operator
of the ferry on the Shenandoah, Captain Edward Snickers.
At
the turn of the century, to the consternation of some of its more
traditionally minded citizens, the village changed its name to
"Bluemont" when the W&OD railroad line was completed,
in order to better attract summer vacationers.
Bluemont
became a thriving summering spot until the vacation by railway
gave way to vacation by automobile.
